5:1–10 Paul simply instructs the believer to please God. We, even as Christians, often live to please others and to please ourselves, neglecting the one thing that makes life worth living—pleasing Christ. Paul calls us to get our priorities straight. To please Christ is to trust in His word of grace for us. His grace, His forgiveness, His gift of faith by the power of the Holy Spirit assures us that nothing in this world can separate us from God, and that Judgment Day will be a day of celebration for those who put their trust in Him. • Dear Lord, impress upon my heart the greatness of Your grace to me, by the power of Your Holy Spirit, so that I can walk confidently by faith until I see You gloriously face-to-face. Amen.

5:11–6:13 Christ’s love compels Paul to persevere through all hardships to make God’s offer of forgiveness and reconciliation plain to the people at Corinth. Too often we mute the Gospel’s power because of our pride, our carelessness, or our lack of concern for others. No greater honor can be given us than to be His ambassadors, His spokespeople. He not only saves us but also works through us. • What an honor to be Your ambassador, dear Lord! Continue to deepen our understanding of Your great reconciliation of the world in Christ so we might heartily revel in it with others. Amen.

6:14–7:1 Our relationship with Jesus is intimate because we, as believers, are “the temple of the living God” (v 16). Our faith calls us to break from those things that would compromise our life with Jesus. The good news is that God’s promises are sure even when we are unfaithful. God calls us to claim the promises of His gracious presence again and again through repentance and forgiveness. • Lord, give me the confidence to trust in You more boldly and to separate from the things of the world that would jeopardize my faith. May it be even more apparent that I belong to You alone. Amen.

7:2–16 Paul shares the ups and downs of ministry and his great joy in hearing that the Corinthians’ faith in Christ was solid again. We Christians are often guilty of hoarding Christ’s great love, rather than making room in our hearts for others (cf v 2). God has loved us with an everlasting love through Jesus Christ. To open up our hearts to others, to let them know of Christ’s love, is to experience again the joy of that great love of God for all. • Lord, teach us daily how great, how long, how wide, and how deep is Your love for us and for every person in this world. And teach us the joy of seeing others come to faith. Amen.

8:1–15 The Macedonians forgot themselves as they gave to others as though there were no tomorrow. God also calls us to give generously, because He endows us with earthly things for our neighbors’ benefit. God’s Son, the wealthiest of princes, became the most abject of slaves and gave His all to enrich poor sinners as His royal Bride. • Praise to You, Lord Jesus, for swapping places with us. Make our hearts like Yours so we may embrace Your call to aid all in need. Amen.

8:16–24 As Paul leads a great money-gathering effort, he takes care that clergy and laity work together to ensure that the Church’s financial dealings are untainted by scandal. In our churches, we should honor those who undertake such tasks. Thanks be to God for His gift of willing servants, who distribute the life-giving Gospel in all their service in Christ. • Lord, teach us to manage Your Church’s earthly resources for Your glory and the advancement of Your mission. Amen.

9:1–5 Because good intentions sometimes do not get acted on, Paul sends three representatives to Corinth to offer gentle encouragement to deliver what was promised. The Lord has representatives to encourage us today as well. E.g., we should listen to those who gently remind us to keep our baptismal vows. • We offer thanks to You, Lord, that You did not count the cost when You sent Your Son. For His sake, You watch over Your promises to keep them. Lord, drown my old self in the waters of Baptism day by day, that my new self may truly please You in all things. Amen.

9:6–15 Paul urges the Corinthians to go with the flow of God’s self-giving in Christ by giving themselves to others, so that the downward and outward movement of grace comes full circle in an ascending symphony of thanksgiving. Seeing things in an earthly, me-first way is miserly and petty. Instead, we should open our hands to receive from God and extend them to give to our neighbor. We marvel that in Jesus it is always more and never less and rejoice that God’s gifts multiply as we receive and share them. • Lord, open and widen our narrow hearts to You, to Your children, and to all. Amen.

Ch 10 Paul’s opponents cut him to ribbons and paint themselves in glowing colors, but he presses forward in spiritual warfare, winning souls for Christ against all odds, rejoicing that the Lord prospers his work and opens doors for his ministry, giving all glory to Christ. Dear Christian, do not judge your ministers by the standards of secular business and entertainment, but go by whether they speak with the Shepherd’s voice and give His care. As Christ endured the darts of the evil one to rescue the undeserving from his clutches, so Paul and faithful ministers submit to affliction in order to reach the lost and build up the flock. • Lord, grant us to die to self and live to You, and to be instruments of Your mission, not obstacles in its way. Amen.

11:1–15 Paul went over the top in real ministry to bring the true Christ and the true Church to the Corinthians. He now grieves that they are falling for fake ministers who push a fake Christ. Today, believers must wake up to the fact that pure doctrine, right worship, and genuine pastors cannot be taken for granted. Although Christ knew many would cast aside His mercy, He still bore the cross and He still sends out true shepherds with the genuine Gospel. • O Jesus, whose exalted body bears the wounds You suffered for us, cause us joyfully to suffer for the sake of remaining connected to You in Your true Church through the service of true shepherds. Amen.

11:16–33 Paul gives sensitive personal information to prove that a genuine servant of Christ carries his Master’s cross and drinks His cup. We, too, must suffer with Christ now in order to reign with Him later. The Lord and His angels protect and accompany His servants even when they seem to have forsaken us. • Jesus, I trust in You as “I walk in danger all the way.” Amen. (LSB 716:1)

12:1–10 Like scarcely any other person before or since, Paul tasted the powers and bliss of heaven, but at the same time suffered bitterly under the curse of sin. “You are dust, and to dust you shall return” (Gn 3:19), yet believers truly already sit in the heavenly places (cf Eph 1:3). • Lord, help us keep our balance as we walk with one foot in the perishing world and the other in the world to come! Amen.

12:11–21 The Corinthians should not have sat on their hands while the intruders tore Paul apart. The apostle wants to return for another visit, his heart and arms open wide with love, but he is also prepared to be firm if necessary. People and pastors today, remember your vows to God concerning one another, and keep them well. The Lord still comes into our troubled lives, with His heart set to do His proper work of mercy. • Jesus, may Your coming to us in grace not be in vain, but for our good. Amen.

13:1–10 If need be, Paul will bind sins and excommunicate the unrepentant on his next visit. Yet, he hopes examination of consciences will show the Corinthians that they hold the Lord’s doctrine and that they forsake the way of death to cling to the Lord of life. If Christ dwells in them, then Paul will come in gentleness, for the Gospel will hold sway. • Lord, keep us in Your truth and quicken our repentance, that we may abide in You and You in us. Amen.

13:11–14 Confident that God’s Word will do its work, Paul utters no more stern demand or harsh rebuke. He moves through gentle appeal to end on a triumphant note. We should take our bearings from God’s good purpose and the communion of saints. The blessed Trinity is not dry theory but the God of love in whom we have life now and forever. • Praise to You, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, that You give Your Church Your very life! Amen.

1:1–5 Paul’s greeting anticipates the Letter’s central argument. According to His Father’s will, Christ has graciously given Himself for our sins and delivered us from this present evil age; therefore, works of the Law are not necessary for salvation. Teachings that compromise this core truth rob God of His due glory and rob us of true peace, for God brings true peace to our hearts through the forgiveness of sins. • Heavenly Father, by the power of Your Son’s resurrection, set our hearts free and forever at rest. Amen.

The Gospel, through which God calls us to be His own, proclaims God’s grace in Christ. • May Your precious Word, O Lord, be taught in all truth and purity so that we may receive Your divine blessing. Amen.

Today, enemies of God’s Church continue to question the divine origin of the Christian message, causing doubts and confusion among many believers in Christ. As God called Paul “by His grace,” so He now seeks to change hearts through the Good News of His Son. • Keep us faithful to Your Word, O Lord, when doubts threaten. Amen.

2:1–10 By divine revelation, Paul goes to Jerusalem with Barnabas and Titus to visit Church leaders who, in spite of some opposition in their midst, approved of his message and mission to the Gentiles. Today, Christians continually face threats to the freedom they have in Christ, even from their own sinful flesh. The Gospel comes from God and thus cannot be deprived of its power to set us free. • Lord, grant us strength in our partnership in the Gospel. Amen.

2:11–14 For the sake of the truth of the Gospel, Paul publicly rebukes Peter for his hypocritical conduct, which communicates that the Gentiles must keep Jewish laws. The Word of God condemns hypocrisy (Mt 23:28; Lk 12:1; 1Pt 2:1; cf Lk 20:20). Yet this history shows that God is true to His promise of mercy toward sinners (1Co 1:9; 1Jn 1:9). • Lord, keep us from hypocrisy in our thoughts, words, and actions. Affirm our freedom won by Christ. Amen.

2:15–21 With the incident with Peter as the backdrop, Paul presents the Epistle’s core theological argument: justification is by faith in Christ and not by works of the Law. Those who appeal to the Law in addition to Christ as a means of salvation make His death meaningless—worse still, null and void. God’s Son loves us and gave Himself for us to free us from the Law’s condemnation. • O God, our earthly life in Christ now has a high purpose, to live for You (2:19). Grant me full confidence in Christ Jesus, who alone can save me. Amen.
